Wushu National teams selection begins

Final selection trial forBRICS Games and selection trial for the 10th Asian Wushu Championship commencedat Inddor Hall Bhagwati Nagar, here today.

Around 250 athletes fromall affiliated units including those from Services, Army, Indian Air Force, CRPF,SSB, ITBP, BSF and Assam Rifles have reported for the two-day selection process,organised by the Wushu Association of India (WAI) in support with WushuAssociation of J&K and J&K Sports Council.

Later, those shortlisted athletesshall undergo physical test, which shall be carried out on the University ofJammu (JU) campus, a handout issued here today informed.

Earlier, the general  secretary WAI, Vijay Saraf; Suhel Ahmed (CEO WAI)and Kuldeep Handoo (Dronacharya Awardee) declared the event open.

“Wushu Association ofIndia has  projected  J&K as the main centre for Nationalcoaching camp in the forthcoming events, as J&K bestowed with high altitudenature, which is the pre requisite for this combat sports,” said WAI CEOspeaking to the gathering. 

In Taolu, more than eightevents for both men and women took place today. Remaining events have beenlined up for tomorrow from 9 am onwards at the same venue.

Prominent among those tookpart in the selection included Roshibina Devi (Arjuna Awardee), Pooja Kadian(World Champion) and eight other athletes, who have recently qualified for theWorld Cup scheduled to be held in Australia.
