Top J&K shuttler shifts to Hyderabad to pursue excellence

Present J&K champion in all three formats of singles, doubles and mixed doubles, Bhavya Sharma of district Kathua has shifted to Hyderabad to pursue excellence in the most competitive Olympic discipline of Badminton.

Staying at Hyderabad to train with top ranked shuttlers of the country at Suchitra Badminton Academy, Bhavya has sacrificed a lot by staying away from the family for nearly six years, while his family has quietly invested in terms of money for the passion of sports.

Bhavya became J&K UT Champion for the first time in 2025 and lifted the mixed doubles title pairing with Krishika Mahajan. However, he has won second consecutive men’s doubles trophy partnering with Puranjay Sharma.

He left his schooling midway in 11th standard to move to Ghaziabad in Delhi in 2020 to seek expert training. Soon after completing his school, he shifted to Himachal Pradesh to further his sporting career.

However, he could not do much by staying in Himachal and then decided to join one of the top Badminton academies in Hyderabad for advance training.

“Now, for the last  two years, I have been training at Suchitra Badminton Academy alongside some top ranked shuttlers of the country. There is a lot of improvement in my game with the result, I have played semifinals and secured bronze in the North Zone Championship held at Una,” said Bhavya.

“Now, this year onwards, I have decided to play all the ranking tournaments so as to expose myself to some tough contests. Besides National events, a couple of international tournaments are also on the cards. Let us see, how things move,” disclosed Bhavya, who continued his studies post college and pursue Bhachelor of Physical Education(BPEd).

Belongs to Kathua town,Bhavya’s first love was football, which he played for three years at the school level as a student of Delhi  Public School Rajbagh. One fine day, he tried racquet at the school courts and turned to the game and represented his institution in the School Games and other local events.

“In fact, my fitness level, being a football player, helped me adjust easily in Badminton. With thepassage of time, my love for Badminton grows and so the parents’ support, who extended me all the needed help to become the State Champion,” explained Bhavya.

Bhavya was all praise for his first professional coach at Delhi.  “Igot the basic training during my initial years of Badminton at Ghaziabad in Delhi under the guidance of Shubham Singh, whom I consider as my first coach. He shaped and motivated me on professional lines,” informed Bhavya.
