Kumaresh A of TN merges sole leader, set to win top prize

Kumaresh A of Tamil Nadu emerged sole leader after round seven with Ashutosh Jamwal of J&K and Prakash Ram of Punjab were trailing behind with six points in the ongoing International Rating Chess Fiesta Tournament at IDPS campus, here today.

Ashutosh is all set to improve his rating after win against a higherrated opponent, Ishmeet Singh (1853) of Punjab. Senior J&K players, SumitGrover and Maxim Singh were at third place with 5.5 points.

Young participant from J&K, 15-year old Aarav Gupta (1804) and Pazhany Kaushal Kohli (under-13) have done well securing five points each despite loss in the seventh round. While Pazhany lost to the title contender, Kumaresh A, Aarav beaten by Prakash Ram of Punjab on the top tables.

A couple of more young boys from J&K, Vaibhav Dwedi, Samayak Jain, Shivinder Chib and Ritvik Gandotra have also played well earning with five points to their credit.

The only visually impaired participant, Devyanshu Choudhary has surprised with three points.

The remaining two rounds of the nine-round competition shall take place tomorrow, followed by the valedictory function of the five-day long mega event at the same venue.

The event is being played under Fide Laws of Chess following Swiss system. Cash prizes worth Rs. Two Lacs will be distributed among the winners of various categories.

Earlier, during the day, Executive Engineer PDD, Anil Abrol visited the venue as special guest and witnessed the intense competition. The event is organized by Jammu District Chess Association in collaboration with Premier Chess Academy USA and IDPS School.

International Arbiter Varun Kumar is chief Arbiter of this event and ably supported by five-member team of Arbiters including Anand J S from Kerela, Arvindu,  Nirmal Sharma,  Ajit Kumar and Stuti Gupta (all J&K).
