J&K Badminton lacks in infra, exposure

The Indian Badminton has changed a lot in the recent times so is the infrastructure and exposer, but in back home in J&K, the game still rely on aging structures and stagnated administrative control.

The players train in the limited facilities hardly get the much needed exposure and push to pursue the game as career in all these years of Badminton existence in the Union Territory.

This was stated by former J&K champion, Gurvinder Singh, a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) staffer, in conversation with the SPORTSLINE.

“The game of Badminton has changed a lot in the recent past so is its infrastructure and training aspects. Now, shuttlers need strength and power to dominate and stay afloat as the game have become so fast,” said Gurvinder adding, “We live in a remote location, soit becomes very tough for an individual and his family to sustain for long, thus take a risk.”

Gurvinder, who was part o fthe gold winning team of the RBI Jammu in all India meet, pointed out at the ill-equipped administration of the game in J&K.

“The Badminton Association needs to change and must think on giving exposure to the talent so as to improve the performance at the National stage. Our state champions feel it difficult to face those who train in specialised academy environs. And, to seek training outside J&K, spending from the pocket, is not possible for an individual. So the Association must come forward and support,” expressing his concern, said Gurvinder.

However, he was happy with the recent developments in the game and building of modern infrastructure and human resource in private sector.

“The initiative of opening of a Badminton academy in Jammu by a former player in the outskirts of the city is something encouraging. It was heartening to find Academy hiring the services of a coach, who has spent pretty long time at country’s top coaching facility,”disclosed Gurinder, who is younger brother of J&K’s top Ranji cricketer,Kavaljeet Singh.
