Beating the professional side of Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) 2-1, Jammu North today clinched the J&K UT Hockey title at K K Hakhu Stadium, here. The event was organized by the Hockey J&K in support with J&K Sports Council (JKSC).
In this well contested final, Jammu North took the first lead against experienced side of JKP in the 39thminute of the match when Gurmeet Singh converted a penalty corner. However, soon came the equalizer with Prabhjot Singh converting the penalty corner into a clear goal.
The match was heading towards 1-1 draw when Sukhchinder Singh, to the surprise of JKP defense line, scored a field goal beating the advancing goal-keeper in the 54thminute of the game.
A total number of 17 teams representing various districts of the UT and those combined sides of Jammu contested for the top honours.
Sunil Gupta and Sushil Kumar were the umpires in the final while Chanveer Singh, Gargi, Jaspreet Singh and Sahil Kumar assisted on the table in different capacities.
In the valedictory function, Minister for Sports, Satish Sharma was chief guest, who presented the title trophies and other individual prizes. He congratulated the winners and runners-up teams and assured the Hockey J&K for all possible help in rebuilding hockey in J&K.
Secretary JKSC, Nuzhat Gul was guest of honour, who appreciated Hockey J&K for taking initiatives to revive the game.
In his welcome address, Dr. Taran Singh, general secretary Hockey J&K expressed his gratitude to patron in chief of the Association for being guiding force in building confidence among the hockey enthusiasts. He was all praise for tournament director, P D Singh for the smooth and successful conduct.
Among other prominent present were Ravinder Singh, Ajay Sharma, Javed Ur Rahman, Jahangir Khan, SS Gill and Tejinder Singh.
