It takes time to learn Judo, says Olympian Tombi

Both trainees and theguardians need to be patient to get the desired results, the reason being ittakes time to learn and train in the Olympian game of Judo.

This was stated by one ofthe top players of the country, Khumukcham Tombi Devi, an Olympian and ArjunaAwardee of 2008, who was in Srinagar in connection with the 10th AllIndia Police Games Judo Cluster.

Now, coach of the CRPF team,Assistant Commandant, Tombi said that a player needs uninterrupted training foryears together to develop the skills of speed, strength, endurance, power andwill to win.

“It is not easy to win amedal in the Olympic discipline of Judo, especially in the senior group. Oneneeds at least five years to become a medalist at the National stage. It takestime to grow fully in terms of skill, endurance, strength, power and will towin against the strong opponent,” said Tombi, who belongs to Manipur.

Qualified coach from NSNIS, Tombi Devi is a meda winner in Commonwealth, Asian Championship and EuropeanCircuit as also a National Games champion in 48 kg weight category. She startedtraining in Judo in 1993 and won her first medal at the national stage in theyear 2000. She practiced the game for pretty long time of 23 years (1993-2016).

On being asked abouttransformation in Judo since its inception in India, she said, “Not much has changedin terms of the game, however, the rules keep on changing with the passage oftime. Infrastructure has improved a lot, so are the opportunities. A judoenthusiast just need to be patient and spend a couple years of hard trainingunder the guidance of qualified individuals to get the desired results.

  

Important to mention herethat CRPF has produced three Olympians and an equal number of Arjuna Awardeesin the discipline of Judo.
